Damage been done?

David Beckham wants to stay in Italy and his lawyers are working on trying to make that happen, according to reports. On loan from the Galaxy to AC Milan, Beckham might not return in early March like he's supposed to.

While that may not have been much of a surprise to some, the idea was that he would return and play in his third season with the Galaxy. But now that he's apparently decided on trying to make a go of it in Italy for good, has he done irreparable damage? Would he be accepted by Galaxy fans and MLS fans in general should he come back?

If so, why bother bringing him back? AC Milan is willing to deal for him and rumors vary from $6-20 million in terms of the money the Italian club is willing to shell out for his services.

It just seems that the Galaxy stands more to gain at this point than to lose. They could ship out a player who may not necessarily want to be with the club, attempt to put a focus back on the field and on their soccer product, and make some money while they're at it. It might be a bit of a PR disaster for a while but perhaps that's a storm worth weathering.

I don't think the Galaxy and MLS can afford to not let him go. Getting in a protracted, and maybe venomous, battle over a player that wants to leave sets a bad precedent. Players might be less likely to come to MLS, especially as a stepping stone to the European leagues, if this issue turns into shenanigans

I knew this was going to happen. Oh well. LA can use the funds to make a real team.

Good piece of business to sell him. I don't see a down side.....

There is a downside -- the lack of interest in MLS across the globe. No Asian tours, no millions of kit sales, no 26,000 average road-game draw compared to 17,000 for teams without Becks.

Let's be honest folks, Becks makes people pay attention to our league, which is good news over the long run.

As for "damage being done," I don't see it. I don't buy any of these stories that says Becks has enlisted his lawyers to get him out of L.A. The European idea of "news" is so far removed from what we have in the U.S. as to make it so nothing should be believed until proven.

When the man says he wants out, I'll buy it. But he hasn't and I'm guessing he won't and that he will stand by his pledge two years ago to work to raise the standards in the U.S. with his presence.

agreed - I would think the fans would support selling him and bringing in someone like DMB. Sell while the market is high!

what a FIASCO becks turned out to be for the mls, the galaxy, all involved. this speaks so poorly of the league, i don't really know where to begin.

I can speak for plenty of Galaxy fans when I say we don't want him back. Some of us even want him back just so he can hear our scorn and ride pine till october.

At any rate, this gives the Galaxy elbow room to play with the salary cap and build a solid team.

Sell, sell, sell. And now that Becks went public we could ask for an even higher price.
