The 29-year-old Mexican defender is on the brink of signing a new deal with FC Barcelona that would keep him at the Catalan club until 2014. The La Liga outfit, which is currently in first place with 41 points, has revealed its plan to lock up several of the club’s stars. Márquez who has been a consistent presence in the backline since arriving via AS Monaco in 2003 appears to be the first to renegotiate. The El Tri captain has been a part of the club’s two La Liga titles and one UEFA Champions League title team when the Catalans won Europe’s top club prize in 2006.
This is welcoming news for fans of both Márquez and El Tri. Just six months ago there was a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the defender as Pep Guardiola took charge at Camp Nou. Many wondered if he would factor into the new manager’s first-team squad, but El Kaiser de Michoacan has been a key member this season for Guardiola. He recorded his 200th match for Barcelona in the SuperClásico and has appeared in 12 of 16 league matches thus far.

Omar Bravo (Deportivo La Coruña): As noted in last Friday’s preview, Bravo was due. The forward entered at the beginning of the second half and provided the Galicians with their second goal after being taken down in the penalty area. He converted the penalty kick in the 69th minute.
Andrés Guardado (Deportivo La Coruña): Started but subbed in the 58th minute of the 2-0 victory.
Rafael Márquez (Barcelona): The defender played the entire match as the Catalans cruised to a 4-0 victory over Valencia.

The Touchline correspondent Sean Grybos takes a look at Tricolor players in Europe ahead of this weekend's slate of games:
Deportivo La Coruña enters a crucial stretch in which the club must balance the demands of La Liga with those of the UEFA Cup. The club hosts Group H foe Feyenoord on November 27th and then plays away at Polish side Lech Poznan on December 4th. In La Liga, the club faces Athletic Bilbao, Almeria, and Málaga in its next three matches.
Is Deportivo going to make it through this stretch intact? The club lacks midfield depth. On Wednesday, several midfielders competed at the international level including Guardado. Up first for Deportivo is a home match against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. This week’s El Tri in Europe preview is found below.

Ricardo Osorio (VfB Stuttgart): I am looking forward to how Osorio responds after his own goal on Wednesday. Is the defender going to rebound now that he has two tough matches against Wolfsburg and Sampdoria in the next seven days?
Dutch Eredivisie
Héctor Moreno (AZ): The club fell back to fourth place after last weekend’s draw with Vitesse Arnhem. He was an unused sub in Honduras and should be ready to compete on Sunday against Dutch leader Ajax.
Carlos Salcido (PSV Eindhoven): The club looks to rebound after last weekend’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat against Ajax. PSV sits sixth in the table and need to take three points at home against SC Heracles Almelo. Salcido is needed but after competing against Honduras and traveling back to Holland, will he factor? The club’s next UEFA Champions League match at Atlético Madrid looms on Wednesday.
Francisco Javier Rodríguez (PSV Eindhoven): As an observation reader at The Touchline noted, PSV has recently failed when both Salcido and Maza are in the lineup. While Salcido may rest this weekend in preparation for the match in Madrid, Rodríguez should play against SC Heracles Almelo.

El Tri in Europe: Nov.15-16 recap
Here's how Tri players fared in the Old World this past weekend.
La Liga
Omar Bravo (Deportivo La Coruña): Atlético Madrid scored four times as the club defeated Deportivo 4-1. Bravo was on the bench as an unused substitute.
Andrés Guardado (Deportivo La Coruña): Guardado played all 90 minutes in Depor’s loss in Madrid. He came close to scoring in the 41st and 89th minutes and ended the match with three shots.
Rafael Márquez (Barcelona): The defender played the entire match and was pivotal to the club’s 2-0 victory over Recreativo Huelva. Márquez won a free kick early in the second half shortly before Barca’s first goal.
Guillermo Luis Franco (Villarreal): The forward entered in the 76th minute in Villarreal’s 2-2 tie versus Málaga. He won a free kick late in the match from just outside the box, but Marcos Senna, one of Spain’s heroes from Euro 2008, was unable to convert as his shot went left.
English Premiership
Carlos Vela (Arsenal): After his brilliant Carling Cup performances, there was media speculation regarding if Vela would be in the starting eleven against Aston Villa. Vela did not start but entered in the 68th minute for forward Nicklas Bendtner. Other than a crafty flick to Emmanuel Adebayor in the 77th, Vela had minimal chances to create for himself or his teammates.
Nery Castillo (Manchester City on loan from Shaktar Donetsk): Did not play.
Giovani dos Santos (Tottenham Hotspur): Injured expected to be out for the next month.

Aarón Galindo (Eintracht Frankfurt): Paced by Neven Subotic’s brace, Borussia Dortmund cruised to a 4-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Galindo played the entire match for Frankfurt.

El Tri in Europe kicks off
One of the things I'd wanted to offer here on The Touchline was a roundup of the Mexicans abroad. A growing number of Mexican players have made their way across the pond and I'd wanted to keep track of them sort of how I do our beloved Mexican-Americans down south of the border.
Time constraints kept me from doing that but it will be a regular feature after all. Sean Grybos will contribute our weekly preview and recap of the Mexicans abroad right here on The Touchline.
Here's the first edition of El Tri in Europe.
La Liga
Omar Bravo (Deportivo La Coruña): Bravo has appeared in five matches for the Spanish club. While he has yet to score in La Liga, Bravo did find the back of the net in Deportivo’s Copa del Rey match against Elche CF on November 12th. Deportivo is away at Atlético Madrid on Sunday. La Liga stats: 2 starts, 4 substitutions, 6 shots, and 4 shots on goal

Carlos Vela (Arsenal): The 19-year-old continued his impressive run through the Carling Cup with another brilliant performance (a goal and an assist) against Wigan Athletic this past Tuesday. He now has four goals in his last two Cup matches including a sublime chip over Wigan’s Chris Kirkland. Arsene Wenger believes that Vela can be an elite striker, but is the Arsenal boss ready to feature the teenager this Saturday against Aston Villa? Premiership stats: 0 starts, 4 substitutions, 3 shots, and 1 shot on goal
Nery Castillo (Manchester City on loan from Shaktar Donetsk): Trapped in loan limbo, Castillo finally had an opportunity to play in El Tri’s friendly against Ecuador on Wednesday. He started and logged 73 minutes before being substituted. With his career at City over, Nery’s next move is yet to be determined after the recent failed negotiations between Shaktar Donetsk and Chivas. Premiership stats: None
Giovani dos Santos (Tottenham Hotspur): Dos Santos will not factor into Tottenham’s match this weekend. The young attacking player is out for the next month after suffering an ankle injury in training last week. Tests revealed that the sprain will not require surgery. Premiership stats: 2 starts, 4 substitutions, 5 shots, and 0 shots on goal
German Bundesliga
Aarón Galindo (Eintracht Frankfurt): The 26-year-old center back has seen action in 8 of the club’s 12 league matches. Last season he made 21 starts for Frankfurt. On Saturday, the clubs travels to Borussia Dortmund. Bundesliga stats: 8 starts
