My latest column for SI.com is about the Latino influence in this MLS postseason. And really, it's another sign that the league is getting back to the early days a bit, the days when Spanish-speaking stars drove the league.
Marco Etcheverry and Carlos Valderrama were wonderful players, as were Mauricio Cienfuegos and Raul Diaz Arce and the other old-school MLS players I mentioned in the story.
Now, we've got the likes of Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Juan Pablo Angel and Javier Morales. It's not a coincidence that those four players are the best players on their respective teams and that those teams were semifinalists.
It's good to see that sort of influence on teams. The Etcheverrys and Valderramas set the bar high in the early days and now we're getting back to that. Both coaches I talked to said economics has been the driving force behind that but whatever the case it's great to see.
